On Sunday, a driver in a red SUV plowed through a Christmas parade in Waukesha Wisconsin, killing six people and injuring over 40. Now, court documents have revealed that suspect Darrell Brooks Jr. was spotted driving slowly before speeding up to plow through the parade.
NBC 15 reported that a criminal complaint states that a City of Waukesha Police Department detective saw the red vehicle driving southbound on White Rock Avenue and honking its horn. People quickly began to spread out and jump out of the way of the car, while the detective pounded on the hood demanding that the driver stop. Instead, the driver sped up as he entered the parade procession, striking multiple parade participants and spectators.

Another officer who had spotted the SUV also told him to “stop, stop the vehicle” multiple times. He added that the vehicle was going about 25 miles per hour as it drove through an open lane between the parade participants and spectators. The officer noticed that Brooks was “looking straight ahead, directly at him, and it appeared he had no emotion on his face.”
Brooks reportedly started going even faster as he drove through the procession westbound on East Main Street while using his horn. The officer said that it seemed that he used his brakes on East Main Street and NW W Barstow Street, but then the vehicle rapidly accelerated. The officer heard the sound of tires squealing as he saw the vehicle turn left abruptly into a crowd of parade participants.
This officer said that it was clearly an intentional act to “strike and hurt as many people as possible.” The complaint adds that a third officer, who has been identified as Officer Scholten, shot at the vehicle three times and struck it all three times.
“There was no attempt made by the vehicle to stop, much less slow down,” said one witness who reported seeing the red SUV going in a zig-zag motion. Brooks has been hit with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide, and is expected to have another one added soon after prosecutors revealed yesterday in court that a child had become the sixth victim to die from their injuries.
Bail for Brooks has been set at $5 million, which is controversial given the fact that many believe he should not be given bail at all. It took prosecutors more than ten minutes to read out all of Brooks’ prior convictions and pending charges, which span across three states.
