The following article, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene: GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy Doesn’t Have the Votes to Become Speaker, was first published on Big League Politics.
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has indicated that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy lacks the votes necessary to become Speaker of the House in the event control of the lower chamber shifts in next year’s midterms, speaking on Rep. Matt Gaetz’s “Firebrand” podcast on Thursday.
“Right now, we know that Kevin McCarthy has a problem in our conference. He doesn’t have the full support to be speaker,” Greene told Gaetz. “I think there’s a door open for a challenger.” To be elected Speaker of the House, a member of Congress needs the support of a majority of its members.
Greene has asserted that McCarthy failed to properly oppose far-left censure measures targeting herself and Representative Paul Gosar, spearheaded by Democrat oligarch Nancy Pelosi. Both of the members were stripped of their committee seats by Democrats determined to raise a ruckus over colorful social media posts, seeking a “scalp” of members of Congress elected by their constituents.
“I can’t respect leadership that doesn’t hold people accountable but yet allows people like me and [Rep.] Paul Gosar to be constantly trampled and abused and will throw us under the bus at the first given chance,” Greene said of McCarthy’s leadership.
Conservative members of the House Republican caucus previously attempted to block the election of corporate libertarian Paul Ryan as Speaker in 2015, only to relent when Ryan prepared to utilize the votes of Democrats to secure the speakership.
It’s likely a conservative candidate for Speaker would have experience leading more conservative elements of the House Republican Caucus, such as Arizona’s Andy Biggs or Ohio’s Jim Jordan. Democrats hold a thin 221-213 lead in the lower chamber, a scant majority likely to be erased in the event of a red wave election forecast in the polls. A handy GOP majority could set the stage for a battle for the speakership, with no clear heir apparent poised to succeed McCarthy.
